Social networking has been sweeping the internet landscape for years and if your law firm is not taking advantages social networking has to offer, you may just get left in the dust.
If you aren’t familiar with social networking, I’m referring to sites like facebook and twitter. These sites give you a platform to interact with your current and potential clients and inform them what you are all about. They also help you network with others in your field and learn from the people you interact with.
These aren’t sites where you want to bombard your customers with advertisements to your service. You want to use these sites to share information. This helps build your credibility in your field of law and is a big step in permission marketing.
Look at these sites as the local bar, restaurant, club, or other social hangout. You aren’t going to walk all over the place just pitching your services. You want to go out and give advice and share your opinion on topics.
There is a lot of misconception that these sites will help improve the SEO of your website. This is not true. Google has started to post twitter feeds in live search results, but this is still experimental. And facebook requires a login so it’s safe to say that the search engines are not indexing these pages. However, social networking sites can help in getting you traffic (as long as you are active on the sites). Both facebook and twitter allow you to post a link to your website – which on some sites will end up being the main referrer for the website.
The problem with social networking is – it can be hard work. Try to make it something you enjoy. If you like helping others then it just might be a great platform for your business. If you enjoy blogging, there is a good chance you will also enjoy using these social networking sites to help gain traffic to your law firm’s website.
